At Home in the Sheffield Neighborhood

For more than 30 years, BBA Architects has had a close connection to Chicago’s Sheffield neighborhood, part of the larger Lincoln Park Community, designing and renovating dozens of homes in and around the area. So when the Sheffield Neighborhood Association hosted its 55th annual Garden Walk this summer, it felt like a natural opportunity for BBA to spend a little time with the neighbors we’ve been working alongside for decades.

BBA was proud to sponsor the Garden Walk’s Family Fest, joining residents and visitors for an afternoon of music, activities, and beautiful gardens. BBA Principals Edward Twohey and Gary Beyerl, along with team members Sidney Trobee and Erin Morgani, represented BBA at the event, where they also had the chance to catch up with former clients who stopped by with their own young family.

The Garden Walk has been a celebration of the Sheffield neighborhood's character since 1969. That character is a big part of what has drawn BBA to the neighborhood over the years and what makes working there so rewarding.

Many of the homes BBA has worked on in the Sheffield neighborhood are historic, and renovating them often requires finding a thoughtful balance between preserving the qualities that make a house special and adapting it to the way people live today. That can mean working closely with the Sheffield Neighborhood Association and local officials when a project requires zoning relief or other special approvals.

Those conversations are an important part of the process. BBA typically shares its plans with neighborhood representatives, discusses how the proposed work will affect the property and surrounding community, and works toward solutions that allow historic homes to remain part of the neighborhood while functioning as modern homes.

After three decades and dozens of projects, the Sheffield neighborhood has become more than just a place where BBA has worked. It’s a neighborhood where the firm has built lasting relationships with homeowners, community leaders and fellow neighbors.

“We’ve always felt like we’re part of the neighborhood,” comments Ed. “We have a lot of clients there, and we’ve always felt like we have a successful relationship with the community.”

BBA also continues to take on new-home projects in the area, approaching each property individually and with an appreciation for the character of its surroundings. Whether restoring an older home or designing something new, the goal remains the same: creating thoughtful architecture that belongs in the neighborhood.

For BBA, participating in the Sheffield Garden Walk was a small way to celebrate a community that has been an important part of the firm’s work for more than 30 years and to continue strengthening the relationships that make the neighborhood feel like home.
